During my time at Neugelb in 2021, the internal service design studio of the Commerzbank, I was involved
in the concept and design of a CO2e calculator and advisor in the banking app. The calculator would use
credit card activities that were combined with an individual questionnaire for data points that could not be
estimated using payment activity. This project involved research, competitor analysis, intensive user
testing and agile iterations. In six consecutive one-week design sprints I was the product designer joining one project manager, a scrum
facilitator and two business experts from Commerzbank. The design sprints each started from scratch for
specific challenges and areas of the calculator, building on top of the learnings from previous
sprints. As the calculator was being developed to be embedded in the iOS and Android version of the apps, many of
the components used followed the existing design system, with three new components and seven new
illustrations being created for this product feature. The key challenge turned out to be the messaging of the results and how to communicate changes, as there
were many different expectations from users of what tips they would learn and what advice they would receive
at the end. Many voices during the qualitative user tests at the end of each week echoed that while the calculation
based on their credit card activity was helpful and putting the results into relatable metrics with CO2e
analogies illustrated the impact sufficiently, they were on the fence on being held accountable for trends
over prolonged periods of time. Some users desired to be rigorously tracked and reminded on significant emissions, as they acknowledged
that these things were difficult to keep track off. However they still wanted to feel in control and felt that many of the steps to remedy their emissions,
such as reducing heating or using lids for pots in order to save energy when boiling water, were too simple
to be effective. Many users expected more surprising tips that were closer to miracle cures or monetary
rewards for a more positive climate impact. This website does not use any personal information or tracking, though it contains links to external
